The Superintendent’s Corner: Calamity Day Reminders

As we move deeper into the fall and approach the winter weather season, I want to take a moment to remind our families how Huron City Schools will communicate school delays or closures due to inclement weather or other emergencies. Our priority, as always, is keeping our students safe and making sure families have timely, accurate information.
How We Communicate Closures and Delays
If a delay or closure is necessary, notifications will be issued through ParentSquare, our district’s primary communication tool. Families will receive updates by:
-
Text message or email (to the contact registered in ParentSquare)
-
Local radio stations: K96/96.1, WLEC/93.5, and WCPZ/102.7
-
FinalForms email notices sent to all parents and guardians
If you haven’t signed up for ParentSquare yet, click here to get started. Be sure to register using the same email you used for FinalForms to ensure all your notifications come through correctly.
We try to make delay and closure announcements as early as possible — typically between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. — to give families enough time to make arrangements.
A Note from Dr. Tatman
“When severe weather is in the forecast, district staff — including myself — are on the roads early, checking conditions firsthand. We usually make the final decision to delay or close between 5:30 and 5:45 a.m.
While I have the responsibility to call a delay or closure, the final decision about your child’s safety always rests with you. If you feel it’s unsafe to travel, please keep your child home or allow them to arrive later. Weather-related absences will always be excused.
Our goal is to prioritize safety and communication, while maintaining as much consistency for students as possible.”
— Dr. James J. Tatman, Superintendent, Huron City Schools
Calamity Day Reminders
When winter weather causes us to exceed our five allotted calamity days, we’ll shift to remote learning (formerly “blizzard bags”) to ensure learning continues without extending the school year.
Here’s what to expect:
-
Teachers will post assignments by 10:00 a.m. on the calamity day.
-
Students will have 10 school days to complete the work.
-
Teachers will be available online throughout the day for questions or support.
-
Remote learning only applies on closure days, not two-hour delays.
This plan allows us to keep students engaged and on track, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
