Huron City Schools Remembers Longtime Educator, Rita Moscioni

The Huron City Schools community is mourning the loss of Mrs. Rita Moscioni, a beloved colleague, mentor, and friend who dedicated more than 45 years of service to our students and families. Rita passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy defined by loyalty, compassion, and her unmistakable Tiger Spirit.
“Rita poured her passion, energy, and love into serving generations of Huron students,” said Superintendent Dr. James J. Tatman. “Her impact on this community is immeasurable, and we are all better for having known her.”
Supporting Students, Staff, and Families
In the wake of this loss, Huron City Schools has worked to provide comfort and support across the district. The Erie County Crisis Team joined staff members to ensure students and employees had immediate access to counseling and resources. Local businesses also stepped forward in support, with the Donut House donating 12 dozen donuts and Huron Domino’s providing lunch for the staff. Principals and district leadership have also created flexibility in schedules so staff may attend services if they wish, with continued support available in the days ahead.
To help celebrate Rita’s life, condolence notes are available in the Woodlands main office. Staff have been invited to write a favorite “Moments with Rita” to share with her family. These heartfelt reflections will be collected and presented to her loved ones as a keepsake, offering comfort and preserving her legacy for generations. Rita’s daughter, Sandy, shared that hearing these stories has been a source of comfort and laughter for her family.
A Community That Comes Together
Moments like this remind us of what it means to be One Huron. As a district, we believe in engaging, equipping, and empowering every student, and that mission extends beyond the classroom. By leaning on one another, lifting each other up, and offering support in times of need, we model for our students the importance of compassion, community, and resilience. We will continue to provide resources and support for students, staff, and families for as long as they are needed.
We’re Turning It Purple for Rita – September 4
To honor her memory and the tradition she began, Huron City Schools will Turn It Purple for Rita on Thursday, September 4. Staff and students are encouraged to wear purple as a joyful tribute to her spirit, her service, and the lasting impact she made on our schools and community.
Looking Ahead
Additional counselors and social workers will continue to be available in our buildings to support students who may need it. Families are encouraged to reach out directly to their child’s teacher or school counselor if additional assistance is needed.
Rita Moscioni’s love for children, her dedication to education, and her vibrant spirit have left an indelible mark on Huron City Schools. While her passing is a tremendous loss, her legacy will live on in the lives she touched, the memories we share, and the traditions she created.
